PHOENIX — Celebrities serve as role models for many people.
Some will mirror celebrities’ fashion sense, how they speak or even how they act.
When it comes to politics though, Fox News host Meghan McCain thinks celebrities aren’t being followed.
“Voters aren’t stupid, they don’t want to be told what to do by Alyssa Milano,” McCain told Mac & Gaydos on KTAR News 92.3 FM Wednesday.
“It’s the same mistake that Hillary Clinton made, by making her campaign (too much) about celebrity, (too much) about Hollywood, much too much about Katy Perry.”
McCain, who is the daughter of U.S. Sen. John McCain, was referencing the election win by Republican Karen Handel over Democrat Jon Ossoff in Georgia.
Actor Samuel L. Jackson was among a few popular people in Hollywood donating money and making advertisements campaigning for Ossoff. Clinton also brought in many celebrities to help campaign for herself last year, including Demi Lovato, Katy Perry and Boys II Men during the Democratic National Convention.
“Democrats haven’t learned at this point that they nationalize local elections in such a way that I think insults the voters who go out and vote,” McCain said.
“You should keep Hollywood the (heck) away from your election as much as possible.”
McCain added that people tell her President Donald Trump is a celebrity too, but it’s different.
“President Trump is also a populist phenomenon who happened to be a celebrity, much like Ronald Reagan happened to be a celebrity but then proved himself as a politician,” McCain said. “It is not the same thing as having these weird Hollywood people come in and parachute in and demand that average Americans listen to them on what to do.”
