PHOENIX — The Valley fell short of its own all-time heat record of 122 degrees on Tuesday but broke the June 20 record by topping out at 119.

The previous June 20 record was 116 set last year.

Outflow from an eastern-Arizona monsoon storm from Monday night may have helped keep the Valley below the all-time record on Tuesday. Still, 119 is the fourth-hottest day in Phoenix’s history.

Phoenix tied the daily record on Monday, reaching 118 degrees at about 4 p.m. It wasn’t until the evening that a dust storm hit parts of the state, even causing a wreck near the New Mexico border that killed six.

As for Wednesday, the National Weather Service’s forecast listed the high at 117 degrees and a low of 90 degrees. An excessive heat warning will remain in place until Sunday at 9 p.m.

Other parts of Arizona also saw blazing heat as Tucson broke its daily record of 112 by reaching 116 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Furthermore, Yuma saw a new daily record by getting to 120. Like Phoenix, that was the fourth-hottest temperature ever recorded in Yuma.

During heat warnings, people are encouraged to drink more water than usual and avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugar. They should also take frequent breaks in a shaded or air-conditioned place when working outdoors.
