PHOENIX — The first day of the heat wave in Phoenix did not disappoint when it came to delivering record temperatures.

The National Weather Service said Monday that the official temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was 118 degrees, tying the record for June 19 set last year.

The record was officially tied about 4 p.m. Officials said there is a chance it could be exceeded by the time the sun set.

The high of 118 was the fifth-hottest on the books in Phoenix’s history.

Monday was the first day of a heat wave that is expected to last until at least Thursday. Temperatures are expected to hover near 120 degrees.

There is a chance the city will set a new all-time high record on Tuesday, which is expected to be the hottest day this year.

The National Weather Service called for a high of 120 degrees, just shy of the all-time record of 122 set on June 26, 1990.

The weather service issued an excessive heat watch during the surge in temperatures. During the watch, people are encouraged to drink more water than usual and avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugar. They should also take frequent breaks in a shaded or air-conditioned place when working outdoors.

Children and pets should not be left in cars.
