Fundraiser aims to raise profile of island’s erosion problem

TANGIER, Va. (AP) — Donald Trump’s recent suggestion to a mayor that his tiny Chesapeake Bay island was in no immediate threat from climate change has prompted one resident to start an online fundraiser to help counter the president’s position and highlight the island’s erosion problem.

The Daily Times of Salisbury reported Monday that Trump called Tangier Mayor James “Ooker” Eskridge after CNN reported on the island’s sea-level rise.

Eskridge says Trump reassured him the island would be around for hundreds of years.

The Daily Times reported Thursday (http://delmarvane.ws/2rzmidG) Tangier town council member Anna E. Pruitt-Parks started a GoFundMe site Monday to purchase 550 copies of “Pieces of Tangier,” a 2014 documentary produced by Jenny Roberts. Pruitt-Parks says Roberts’ documentary accurately details the island’s erosion problem.

Pruitt-Parks plans to send the copies to the 535 members of Congress and other federal officials, including Trump.

She has raised $1,895 of her $3,200 goal.
