PHOENIX — Aerospace giant Boeing likely will be sending hundreds of jobs to metro Phoenix within the next few years.
The Seattle Times reported Wednesday the company intended to relocate its Shared Group Services division to Mesa, Arizona from Seattle, Washington as part of a restructuring that was expected to finish in 2020.
The support-services division has about 3,000 employees, but Boeing said that number would not be transferring to Mesa.
Layoffs were a possibility, but group president Beverly Wyse said attrition would also be a factor to make the cuts.
“In the next six to eight weeks, we’ll understand everyone’s preferences and develop a transition plan for each employee,” Wyse told the newspaper.
Another news report said a Boeing statement put the process as lasting up to three years. “… we don’t have numbers of who will be impacted and how.”
Mesa is already home to a Boeing facility that a year ago was awarded a $1.5 billion contract to remanufacture Apache helicopters for the U.S. Army.
The East Valley city has been on a roll in business. Earlier this year, technology company Apple announced it intended to build servers at its plant in Mesa. The servers will be used in data centers.
