WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on a House resolution condemning an attack by Turkish bodyguards on protesters (all times EDT):
The House has unanimously approved a bipartisan resolution condemning attacks against peaceful protesters carried out by bodyguards traveling with Turkey’s president in Washington.
Lawmakers voted 397-0 Tuesday to pass the measure.
The broad support from Republicans and Democrats underscores the lingering anger on Capitol Hill over the violence last month against demonstrators outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence.
The resolution calls for the members of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s (REH’-jehp TY’-ihp UR’-doh-wahnz) security detail who were involved in the incident to be brought to justice.
Pressure has been mounting on the Trump administration not to let the violence go unpunished. But the Trump administration released two members of Erdogan’s detail after holding them briefly following the clash. The guards returned to Turkey.
The State Department continues to investigate the incident.
