PHOENIX — Security checkpoints at Sky Harbor Airport’s Terminal 4 were shut down briefly Monday morning after authorities said an “unusual” item had been found.
Security processing at gates A and D were closed around 6:30 a.m. as a precaution. Travelers still could get through gates B and C, airport spokeswoman Heather Lissner said.
Sgt. Vince Lewis of the Phoenix Police Department said preliminary indications were that the item was some sort of electronic device, possibly a homemade reading device.
The gates were reopened around 7:15 a.m. By then lines were extremely long, although the Sky Harbor website showed checkpoint wait times at the affected gates was 11 minutes each.
Southwest and American airlines, two of the country’s biggest domestic carriers, fly out of the terminal.
