PHOENIX — Arizona Democrats joined a national effort Friday called Resistance Summer in preparation for the 2018 midterm elections.

“The state party is joining the Democratic National Committee” in the effort, Alexis Tameron, chair for the Arizona Democratic Party, said.

Tameron said Democrats will begin their election push early and will be targeting areas that have been historically Republican.

“We’ll be in the reddest of districts, all across our state,” she said. “We’re happy to announce we have interest in from folks in all 30 legislative districts, an interest in running for office so no district will go unchallenged.”

Organizers said President Donald Trump, and the Republican elected officials who support him, are the reason for the ahead-of-schedule push.

“The Republican Party refuses to hold Donald Trump accountable for his devastating policies,” Tameron said.

The Resistance Summer has its eyes set on making changes, but will target a few specific issues in Arizona.

“Ones that are anti-education, anti-progressive values and/or anti-women,” Tameron said.

The state party chair said Democrats will demand to meet with Republican officials.

“If they refuse to meet with constituents because they are not going to answer to what’s happening nationally, then we will meet with them,” she said.
