PHOENIX — In this new age of social media, companies are trying several different tactics in order to attract more views and followers as potential customers down the line.

One of those is a giveaway via screenshot, letting the person get a good deal on a product while giving the company the exposure to that specific customer’s followers.

Sunny Co Clothing, a company started by two University of Arizona seniors, decided to have a 24-hour giveaway for a $64.99 swimsuit for just the cost of shipping and handling as long as they reposted the image and tagged the picture according to a report by BuzzFeed News.

The post had more success than the company could have planned for, with over 100,000 comments on the post. A quick view of Sunny Co’s “tagged posts” list was flooded with posts of the picture tagging the company.

Less than 24 hours after the post exploded, the company decided to update everyone on the rules with a new Instagram post, saying they “reserved the right to cap the promotion if deemed necessary.”

One of the co-founders of the company, Alan Alchalel, posted the same giveaway on this Facebook page, and that page was overwhelmed with comments from customers claiming they had followed the promo rules but were not given the discount on the swimsuit.

BuzzFeed News was sent a handful of screenshots of orders that charted the $12.98 in shipping as well as the $64.99 price tag on the suit, which those in the giveaway were not supposed to be charged with.

The giveaway was sponsored by the Twazer App, and a spokesperson for the app told BuzzFeed News that, “everyone is charged appropriately for their purchases.”

BuzzFeed News reached out to the clothing company but did not receive a comment back. The company’s Instagram page is down as of late Friday afternoon.

We want to hear from you.
