PHOENIX — Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake has found an unlikely ally in his fight for re-election in 2018: Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
Romney is set to headline two fundraising events for Flake this June, according to Politico. The events include a lunch in Tucson and a reception in Phoenix, both on June 2.
The fundraisers will benefit Flake’s re-election campaign, said Steve Voeller, the junior senator’s adviser.
However, Flake’s second run for Arizona senator might not be all smooth sailing.
After ditching and dodging his constituents’ requests for months to hold an in-person town hall, faced an unrelenting crowd when he took to the stage in April to discuss issues like health care and border security.
In February, reports surfaced that Trump’s top adviser, Steve Bannon, was urging some of the president’s wealthy supporters to fund a nonprofit that could be used to oust politicians who don’t support Trump.
Flake was an unrelenting and outspoken opponent of Trump’s throughout his campaign and continued to speak against some of the claims he made as president.
The junior senator already has a primary opponent in former state Sen. Kelli Ward, who announced her run back in October after losing in the 2016 primary to Arizona Sen. John McCain.
