PHOENIX — A 33-year-old man is in custody after allegedly stabbing two men, one fatally, on a Phoenix bus early Monday morning, police said.

Phoenix police said a 49-year-old man was killed and another 33-year-old man was injured after the stabbing incident, which took place near Van Buren Street and Central Avenue in downtown Phoenix.

According to Sgt. Jonathan Howard, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department, the suspect got onto the bus just after 10 a.m. and had a brief interaction with the bus driver over the fare.

Howard said the man then brandished a large knife and stabbed the suspect, who was on the bus in front of him. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. During this altercation, the 33-year-old suspect was also cut, but was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot and was apprehended by police near 7th Avenue and Polk Street. Police also recovered the knife at this time.

The suspect and victims have not yet been identified. Howard said police are still working to establish any prior relationship between the 49-year-old victim and the suspect.

The incident shut down Van Buren Street in both directions between Central Avenue and 1st Street on Monday.

Anyone with information on the subject is encouraged to call the Phoenix Police Department at (602) 262-7626 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

We want to hear from you.
