PHOENIX — Electric carmaker Tesla has announced plans Monday to expand its Supercharger network, including one closer to the heart of Phoenix, before the end of the year.

An exact location has not been made public.

“We’re moving full speed on site selection and many sites will soon enter construction to open in advance of the summer travel season,” the company wrote online.

Other stations plotted for Arizona are set for Tucson, Payson and Willcox.

The move is a major expansion — the growth would more than double the number of stations in the United States. Tesla operates 830 Supercharger stations in over two dozen countries. In February, there were 373 sites in North America.

Tesla already has several of the stations near or around metro Phoenix — Buckeye, Casa Grande, Wickenburg and Gila Bend. The strategy had been to establish the station right off highways for easier access.

Now, the company plans to make “charging ubiquitous in urban centers,” it said in a blog post. The timing is just ahead of the Model 3 sedan rollout.

The Model 3 is the cheapest offering from the automaker, starting at $35,000. Tesla said the car can reach 215 miles between charges.

In December, Tesla changed its charge policy, introducing a fee for new owners who use the supercharging stations when they surpass the annual free ration.
