PHOENIX — Two women with ties to Arizona are on Time magazine’s list of the most influential people of the year, which was unveiled Thursday.

The two women on the list are from different walks of life.

Actress Emma Stone was born in Scottsdale and has become an Oscar-winning international film star. Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was born in Texas, grew up in Arizona and was the first woman appointed to the nation’s highest court.

Stone won her first Oscar earlier this year for her performance in “La La Land.” The 28-year-old was nominated for another Academy Award in 2014 for her role in “Birdman.”

In a short written piece for Time, Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson said, while Stone is a great actress, it’s who she is away from the screen that makes her a great person.

The selfless friend. The wise psychiatrist. The fearless leader. The coolest girl at the party. (She’s even the intense soccer mom, cheering you on, no matter what, at the top of her lungs.) I know that she has played all of these roles in my life. And for that I’m lucky to call her my friend.

O’Connor was on the list because she founded iCivics, a nonprofit that teaches middle and high school students about democracy. The group created a video game-based system that is used by millions of American students each year.

Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor said in a short piece about O’Connor that the former justice “has personified the American pioneer. She secured a central role on the court by blending determination with a politician’s skill at bringing people together.”

We want to hear from you.
