Phoenix could record first 100-degree day of year this weekend

PHOENIX — It may be April, but Phoenix will feel more like summer than spring this weekend.
The National Weather Service said Phoenix could record its first 100-degree day of 2017 on Sunday during a warming trend.
“Ranging from the lower 90s to the middle 90s and, even as we get up to this upcoming weekend, we could be looking at the upper 90s,” weather service meteorolgist Mark O’Malley said.
“We could be looking at that first 100 of the year.”
As of Monday, the weather service forecast called for a high of 97 degrees on Sunday. However, O’Malley said that doesn’t put triple-digit heat out of reach.
“It’s certainly within striking distance and even around the area, there will probably be a few 100s out in southwest Arizona and southeast California,” he said. “It’s just that time of year.”
O’Malley said this week’s temperatures are about 7-10 degrees above normal, but 100 is not unheard of, especially considering the average date for 100 degrees in Phoenix is May 2.
“Not very unusual,” he said.
Last year, Phoenix recorded its first 100-degree day on May 4.
This weekend will not be the first time this year the Valley has flirted with triple digits. On March 19 — the last day of winter — the weather service reported a record high of 96 degrees.
