Anti-Semitic fliers distributed in Scottsdale neighborhoods, near Jewish center

PHOENIX — Anti-Semitic fliers were distributed overnight in a Scottsdale neighborhood, the Anti-Defamation League said Wednesday.

In a tweet, the organization said it was “disgusted” by the fliers dropped near Scottsdale and Cactus roads that featured what appeared to be a rabbi spray-painting a swastika on the walls of a Jewish temple.

Scottsdale police said the fliers did not violate any criminal statutes and contained no specific threats, but they have opened an investigation.

It is unknown who distributed the fliers, but they do have a link to the Daily Stormer, a website associated with neo-Nazi and white supremacist viewpoints.

The flier alleges that Jewish people are behind a wave of anti-Semitism that has swept the United States in recent months. It makes mention of the recent arrest of a teenager in Israel who was charged with threatening American temples.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said last week the 19-year-old suspect, who has both American and Israeli citizenship, was able to hide the origin of his calls and communications to synagogues, community buildings and public places. He said the suspect also made threats in New Zealand and Australia that started as long as six months ago.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the teenager “used very complex methods to shield himself from identification and being caught, and law enforcement had to use a variety of their own complex methods to find him.”

Centers in Scottsdale and Tucson received threats last month, but it is unknown if the man arrested in Israel was behind them.
