PHOENIX — One Arizona family said tweaking the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is a better idea than replacing it from scratch.
Corinne Bobbie’s 8-year-old daughter, Sophia, was born with heterotaxy syndrome. The condition causes problems with all her major organs, including her heart and lungs.
Bobbie said if it weren’t for the Affordable Care Act, her daughter would not be alive.
“Without insurance, we would probably spend about $500 to $600 a month just on medications,” she said. “It would be another, say, $100 a month for doctors’ visits. And when she has specialist visits, we’re talking in the thousands.”
Bobbie is also afraid lifetime caps on medical care would become legal once more.
“By the time Sophia was 3 years old, she had reached hers,” she said. “If something like a lifetime cap is implemented again, people like Sophia are not going to live.”
The American Health Care Act, Congress’ replacement proposal for the Affordable Care Act, has already passed two Congressional committees.
