PHOENIX — It was more than a year ago when an Arizona Department of Transportation official rescued a puppy from the middle of a Phoenix highway.

Today, that same dog is healthy, happy and the mother to six puppies, according to ADOT.

Last January, Dottie was stuck on the median wall along State Route 51 in Phoenix when ADOT reporter Gil Estrada noticed her while monitoring traffic.

Dottie was miraculously able to dodge the traffic along the highway and climbed up on the median wall, where she stayed for an hour until Estrada came and rescued her.

After her owner could not be located, Dottie was then turned over to the Arizona Equine Rescue Organization to help her find a new home.

Today, Dottie is a part of Marci and Denis O‘Shaughnessy’s family.

“Dottie has been a wonderful dog,” Marci told ADOT. “She just lights up the entire house. She’s so lovable.”

Dottie did not come to the O‘Shaughnessy’s alone — she brought with her a family of her own.

Shortly after her rescue, Dottie gave birth to five male puppies and one female puppy, ADOT said. The puppies all live along the same north Phoenix street, with one living with Dottie at the O‘Shaughnessy’s.

Now, Denis, who is recently retired, said all of his free time is taken up by caring for the dogs.

“I was worried that I would have all this free time. Dottie and Fella take care of that,” Denis told ADOT. “They want attention all the time, and I give it to them.”

We want to hear from you.
