PHOENIX — This year was the year of unexpected changes: Donald Trump became president-elect, many respected celebrities and public figures passed away and Sophia and Noah were unseated as the most popular baby names in Arizona.
That’s right, Sophia and Noah – which held the top spots for five and two years, respectively – were knocked to the No. 2 spots by Emma and Liam.
The list of top baby names in Arizona this year was compiled by the Arizona Department of Health Services, which uses birth certificates submitted to its Bureau of Vital Records.

The department found that 404 boys were named Liam and nearly 420 girls were named Sophia in 2016. Noah, Daniel, Sebastian and Alexander rounded out the top five boys’ names, while Sophia, Olivia, Mia and Isabella rounded it out for the girls.
The names will officially be verified in February.
Approximately 112 boys and 77 girls were not named at the time that their birth certificates were submitted, ranking “Not Named” among the top 100 baby names in the state this year.
