Phoenix-area police officers to rappel down building for a good cause

PHOENIX — Police officers from around the Phoenix-area will descend the 27-story CityScape building in downtown Phoenix on Saturday.
The goal of the Over the Edge event is to raise money for Special Olympics Arizona and spread awareness for those with special needs. Those who are participating had to raise $1,000, the cost to support two athletes for an entire year at Special Olympics.
For Arizona State University police officer Becky Garcia, the event is important because of her nephew, who has Down syndrome and has taken part in Special Olympics competitions.
“I believe in their mission to help people who do deal with intellectual disabilities to become more empowered,” Garcia said.
Garcia admitted she is a bit nervous to rappel down a 27-story building, but it’s important to raise awareness for a good cause.
“We’re challenging ourselves to do something that people with intellectual disabilities have to do every day,” Garcia said. “They have to do things that don’t come easily.”
The event Saturday runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
