GLENDALE, Ariz. — When Glendale hosts the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve, the city expects to see an economic boon.
College bowl games traditionally bring in some decent bucks to the host city, so when No. 2 Clemson takes on No. 3 Ohio State in the semi-final, Glendale should hear the cash registers ring.
“We are already taking phone calls and emails from these home states,” said Lorraine Zomok of Glendale’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. “Folks are planning their travel to Glendale and Arizona.”
The expected influx of dollars to both the city of Glendale and to the state will likely come from ticket sales, hotels, restaurants and media spending.
“The last economic impact study that was conducted showed that it’s in the hundreds of millions of dollars,” said Kimberly Larson, who is with the city of Glendale.
In fact, Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business says the economic impact on the state from last year’s championship game was more than 273 million dollars.
The Carey study titled, “The Economic Impact of College Football Playoff 2016,” was released April 13, 2016, by the L. William Seidman Research Institute at the W.P. Carey School. It examined the economic impact of the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship Game held on Jan. 11, and events surrounding that game.
The study says the economic impact was developed using three distinct factors; out-of-state direct visitor spending, organizational spending, and indirect and induced effects.
