TUCSON, Ariz. — Two Arizona police officers were recovering Friday after being injured in a shootout that left a suspect dead.
However, one of the officers is in critical condition.
Officer Jorge Tequida was shot in the shoulder area but the round went into his chest during a shootout with a suspect on the city’s south side on Thursday. Police said on Friday that Tequida is in stable but critical condition and is making progress.
Officer Doug Wilfert, who was shot in the leg, is doing well.
The suspect, 27-year-old Jose Barron Gomez, was wanted on a felony warrant and died.
Police haven’t released the details of how the incident unfolded but said the officers were attempting to arrest Gomez before gunfire was exchanged.
The officers were both wearing protective vests. They’re members of a special unit that tracks down wanted suspects.
Those who want to send cards and letters can mail them to the Tucson Police Department, Operations Division South at 4410 S. Park Ave., Tucson, 85714.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call 88-CRIME.
