PHOENIX — The Arizona state highway that leads to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon will close this week for the winter.
State Route 67 will be blocked off to traffic Thursday about a half-mile south of where it meets U.S. 89A at Jacob Lake.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said most visitor facilities on the North Rim were already closed for the winter. The agency doesn’t send snowplows to clear the 43-mile road during the snowy season.

The rim averages 9 feet of snow a year, according to the National Weather Service.
The highway was scheduled to reopen in the middle of May along with lodging, campgrounds and other amenities.
Highway 64 to the South Rim will remain open.
