PHOENIX — A wheelchair-bound, legally blind man was rescued from a canal Tuesday morning after accidentally falling into the water.
The unidentified man, in his 50s, told fire department rescue workers he had rolled too close to the edge of the dirt path near 36th Street and Baseline Road.
He managed to stay upright in his chair with his head above water while waiting for help.
Fire department officials said they responded to reports of a man stuck in the canal. He had already been in the water for about 20 minutes before help was on its way.
He was suffering from hypothermia but insisted he be taken home rather than a hospital.
