PHOENIX — When Arizonans sit down for their Thanksgiving meal next week, they’ll be doing so with a slightly heavier wallet than last year.

The Arizona Farm Bureau released its annual survey of the cost of a Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday and estimated a drop of about 3 percent for the whole shebang.

“There’s a 16 pound turkey,” Julie Murphree with the bureau said of what’s included in it’s figure. “We have cubed stuffing, pumpkin pie mix, pie shells, sweet potatoes, brown and serve rolls and frozen green peas. We always price for a carrot and celery relish tray because we want our families to eat fruits and vegetables. We also price for a gallon of milk, fresh cranberries, whipping cream, and miscellaneous items.”

The survey figures the cost to feed a family of 10,.

“The overall basket (this year) is $46.27,” Murphree said. That’s $1.56 less than last year.

Murphree said farmers are the main reason that meal costs are down slightly.

“Our commodities across the board are down and supplies are in a good place,” she said. “In other words, farmers are doing the job that they need to do, and almost doing it too well, but it benefits us as consumers.”

The 2016 price is 11 cents more than in 2014. However, it is nearly $6 less than what a similar Thanksgiving dinner cost in 2011.
