PHOENIX — On the night of the 2016 election Tuesday, there were 350,000 early ballots that still needed to be counted from Maricopa County. As of Sunday, five days later, there are still 112,000 early ballots and 55,000 provisional ballots to be counted, according to Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell.

That’s down from the 238,000 early ballots and 55,000 provisional ballots left to be processed and counted on Friday.

A vote count taking about a week is not rare in Arizona. In a lot of elections, a recount must be held to determine the correct winner and the process takes time.

In Arizona’s August primary, a recount decided the state’s 5th Congressional District vote. Arizona Senate President Andy Biggs won the Republican primary by less than 30 votes.

Purcell’s office said counting will continue at 9 a.m. on Monday.

We want to hear from you.
