PHOENIX — Both U.S. Sen. John McCain and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey released statements congratulating Donald Trump on his presidential victory Wednesday.

“This is an exciting moment, and I look forward to working with the new president and administration to expand opportunity for all our citizens,” Ducey said.

The governor, who endorsed Trump’s campaign, went on to call for the country to unify and leaders to “provide Americans some relief from the federal government.”

“I know that I join other governors across the country in standing ready to partner with the new administration and Congress to empower states and citizens, in keeping with the principles of our republic,” he said.

McCain’s statement was much shorter:

“Congratulations to president-elect Donald Trump. As chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will work with him to address the national security challenges facing our nation and to ensure that the men and women serving in the military have the support they deserve,” the statement read in full.

McCain flip-flopped on endorsing the president-elect. He originally held out, insisting he would simply support the party’s nominee. He then endorsed Trump before pulling support after a video was released of Trump making sexually-aggressive comments about women.

Arizona’s other senator, Jeff Flake, took a humorous approach to congratulating Trump.

Flake was also critical of Trump and bumped heads with him during the election cycle.
