PHOENIX — Arizona is still red after Republican nominee Donald Trump defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton for the state’s 11 electoral votes.
His win in Arizona was not key to his path to 270 electoral votes, as the Associated Press projected about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday that Trump had won. Arizona’s vote was announced minutes later.
The historically red state favored Trump in polls for months before quickly transitioning into a toss-up in the past few weeks. A poll last week from NBC News, the Wall Street Journal and Marist had Trump holding a 5 percent advantage in the state despite Clinton’s large push over the summer.
Trump had key wins in battleground states such as Florida, North Carolina and Ohio.
Both candidates made hard pushes in Arizona.
Trump made seven visits to the state, including one of the most notable moments in his campaign on Aug. 31 when the Republican presidential nominee laid out his highly-anticipated 10-step immigration plan.
Clinton, meanwhile, added staff to the campaign in Arizona and made a push with cash for more TV ads running in September.
Trump’s win in Arizona maintains the dominance of the Republican party in the state, with Bill Clinton’s victory in 1996 being the first time since 1948 that a Democrat took the Grand Canyon state.
