PHOENIX — A man suspected of killing a police officer in eastern Arizona was killed early Wednesday morning after a hostage standoff with law enforcement.
The Show Low Police Department said the suspect, 36-year-old Daniel Erickson, was killed. Erickson shot at police sporadically during the six-hour standoff and was killed when officers returned fire.
He had taken a 15-year-old girl hostage during the standoff. She was unharmed.
A manhunt for Erickson took place after he shot and killed 50-year-old police officer Darrin Reed.
Police said they responded to a disturbance call near West Deuce of Clubs and Clark Road about noon Tuesday. A confrontation ensued and Erickson pulled a gun and shot Reed.
The officer was hospitalized in critical condition but later died.
Erickson escaped the scene and a Blue Alert — a statewide message issued when a police officer is injured by a suspect who got away — was issued.
It was canceled after Erickson was found in a cabin resort in Lakeside, where the hostage standoff took place.
Reed had been with the Show Low Police Department since 2008. Prior to that, he worked for the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office. He is survived by a wife, son and daughter.
