Shooting at VA center in Ohio, suspect caught

DAYTON, Ohio — A suspect has been apprehended after a shooting at a Dayton VA Medical Center.

Reports indicate a man opened fire inside the
hospital around 12:15 p.m. EDT Monday, shooting one person before fleeing the scene.

The victim, now identified as Paul Burnside, was shot in the ankle when he struggled with the suspect over the gun. His injury is not life-threatening.

According to, medical crews staged an area outside the
hospital while several buildings on the campus were either evacuated or locked down.

Roads leading to the hospital complex remain blocked.

At the time of the alleged incident, SWAT officers were seen entering the front of the building.

The suspect was identified as a black man wearing a black jacket with a U.S. Marine Corps emblem
and carrying a revolver.

He is currently in custody.

Initial reports state he was driven to the Good Samaritan Hospital emergency room by his sister. He was then taken into custody by hospital security and then transferred to Dayton police. As of 1:25 p.m. EDT, he was being transported to the Montgomery County Jail.
