PHOENIX — Chicago Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber is the talk of the World Series after returning from major knee surgery in April to become one of the team’s most productive hitters.

But Schwarber’s impact on one Arizona fifth grader has gone much farther than any home-run ball ever could.

Campbell Faulkner met Schwarber two years ago at spring training in Arizona, and they bonded almost instantly. The 10-year-old suffers from Mitochondrial disease, a rare disorder that makes it difficult to walk or stand for extended periods of time.

The two have formed a relationship, and Campbell now calls Schwarber “his superhero.” Schwarber dons a green wristband during each plate appearance to show that he’s a member of Campbell’s Crew.

The Cubs slugger will sport the wristband on Friday as Chicago faces the Cleveland Indians in Game Three of the World Series.

Campbell attends Arizona Virtual Academy, a public online charter school which provides his family the flexibility to care for his medical needs.

We want to hear from you.
