Presidential nominees Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton briefly turned a white-tie charity dinner into a personal roast Thursday night in New York.

The annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner is often the last time the two presidential nominees share a stage before Election Day. By tradition, it is a friendly event.

That tradition flew out the window as Trump and Clinton traded barbs and takedowns the night after their final debate. The crowd, which initially laughed at Trump’s crack, began to boo him during his jabs at Clinton, the former senator from New York.

He especially upset the crowd when he called Clinton corrupt.

“Hillary is so corrupt she got kicked off the Watergate Commission. How corrupt do you have to be to get kicked off the Watergate Commission? Pretty corrupt,” the Republican candidate said.

Clinton landed some blows, as well, joking that the Statue of Liberty, for most Americans, represents a symbol of hope for immigrants but “Donald looks at the Statue of Liberty and sees a ‘4,’”

“Maybe a ‘5’ if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair.”

After the Democrat’s remarks, Trump and Clinton shook hands when she returned to their table, unlike Wednesday night after the debate.
