PHOENIX — Sen. John McCain of Arizona said Monday that Donald Trump may or may not be better equipped than Hillary Clinton to fill a Supreme Court opening but Republicans would oppose the Democrat’s nominee if she were president.
His office later clarified that McCain would study the record of any nominee to the highest court in the land and would base his vote on the person’s qualifications.
During an appearance on a Philadelphia talk radio show McCain told the host, “I promise you that we will be united against any Supreme Court nominee that Hillary Clinton, if she were president, would put up.”
“I promise you.”
CNN posted part of the interview:
McCain also said, when asked if Trump was better suited to make certain types of choices, such as the Supreme Court, “… I don’t know because I hear him saying a lot of different things.”
Trump has made disparaging comments about McCain’s military record and said he wouldn’t support
McCain steadfastly said he would support his party’s nominee until recently. McCain revoked his support of Trump over a week ago after a scandalous audio tape surfaced in which Trump made crude comments about women.
There is already one vacancy which Republicans have refused to fill after the death of Antonin Scalia early in the year.
