PHOENIX — A general commercial contractor’s Arizona license has been suspended after several workers were injured in a Phoenix-area church roof collapse.

“From what we’ve already learned, this contractor hired an unlicensed entity to frame a 21,000-square-foot structure,” Arizona Registrar of Contractors Director Jeff Fleetham said. “It is our duty to ensure Arizona’s contracting licensees work within standards and the law.”

The Oct. 3 roof collapse at Heart Cry Church in Queen Creek — located near Sossaman Road and Hunt Highway — hurt seven workers, two of them seriously. The Rural Metro Fire Department said the workers were on the roof when it gave way.

The workers were installing trusses at the time and authorities said they fell about 16 feet to the ground.

The name of the unlicensed entity hasn’t been released.

The registrar first issued Harte Contracting Services, LLC, a CR-61: Carpentry, Remodeling and Repair license in February 2014. Recently, the company applied for and was issued a KB-1: Dual Building Contractor license. The KB-1 license was used to contract for building the church.

The Registrar of Contractors’ summary suspension order alleges seven additional violations including knowingly contracting beyond the scope of the license of the license.

The AROC said Harte Contracting will have a hearing on its suspension Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
