LISTEN: Jeff DeWit - COO of the Trump Campaign

PHOENIX — Donald Trump Campaign COO and Arizona Treasurer Jeff DeWit said it is important people remember that Trump was once an entertainer when they hear old clips of him speaking.

“When people bring up stuff from the past, they have to remember … he’s an entertainer and he was in the entertainment business for a long time,” DeWit told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Bruce St. James and Pamela Hughes on Monday before comparing Trump’s pre-candidacy quotes to radio shock jock Howard Stern.

DeWit was speaking about the latest Trump leak, in which the Republican presidential nominee was caught on tape in 2005 making lewd comments about women to Billy Bush, then of “Access Hollywood.” In the tape, Trump said he is attracted to women and can be sexually aggressive with them because of his fame.

Trump issued an apology on Friday. Though the criticism against Trump has been harsh, DeWit said there is not much else Trump can do.

“There’s only so much you can do when an 11-year-old tape surfaces that has what you thought was a private conversation,” he said. “It’s not like he was out saying this to groups of people. He thought he was having a private conversation.”

DeWit said no one wants to give Trump a pass for his comments, but the country should accept his apology.

“Our country is a very forgiving one,” he said.
