Phoenix police released the name of a man killed in an officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning.
According to police, 25-year-old Angel Torres Jr. was shot and killed by officers after he pointed a gun at them. The gun later turned out to be a black replica BB handgun.
In a press release, police said officers responded to a call around 3 a.m. Saturday about a subject with a gun in the 5700 block of West Thomas Road. According to police, a woman, who lives in the apartment sent a text message to a family member stating that Torres was in her apartment and was believed to be on drugs and was armed.
When officers arrived, they made contact with the woman at the door when the suspect appeared in the hallway and pointed a gun at police. Police said a lieutenant with over 21 years with the department fired at the suspect — striking him. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and officers escorted the woman and her two children out of the apartment to safety. No officers were injured.
Police said that Torres Jr. was the woman’s ex-boyfriend and came into the apartment that morning to retrieve some property. Police said that he arrived unannounced and did not live at the apartment. Police added that the woman reported a history of domestic violence, including threats toward her and her children by Torres Jr.
