PHOENIX — The airfield at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway International Airport will soon have a new look, thanks in part to a more than $9 million federal grant.

The grant — which totals $9,126,000 — will help pay for the replacement of concrete first laid in 1941, when the airport served as a base for training fighter pilots. The area is referred to as the North Apron Area.

“Major undertakings like the North Apron reconstruction project don’t happen without strong support from our Congressional delegation and our partners at the FAA and Arizona Department of Transportation,” Interim Executive Director/CEO J. Brian O’Neill said in a press release.

“Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is appreciative of their continued support as we build and improve this important regional transportation asset.”

The project is expected to take a year to complete. Officials are planning to carry out the work in phases so airport traffic is not affected.

The projects should create slightly more than 100 jobs.

“This is a significant project that will create 105 jobs and enhance the airport’s ability to serve corporate customers, military training exercises, and other general aviation users,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said in the same press release.

Construction on the project should begin about Sept. 20.

In total, the project will cost $10 million. The remainder of the funds were received through a local grant match by ADOT and the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority.
