PHOENIX — U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was first elected to the Senate in 1986, but he’s unsure if this year’s campaign will be his last.
The senator, who received encouraging results in a CNN poll released earlier this week, would first have to beat out former state Sen. Kelli Ward in next week’s primary and then Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick in November if he is to retain his seat.
McCain said he’s treated this campaign — at least in the past several years — as one that could be his version of riding into the sunset.
“The last two or three I’ve treated as the last campaign because that’s a decision you’d make some years from now,” he said. “Frankly, I hadn’t thought about it much.”
McCain said he is unsure when he will call it quits because of the situation the world is in.
“The world is on fire,” he said. “As chairman of the Armed Services Committee, I’m looking at all of the important issues we’re facing. That’s what really decided [me running again], was the situation in the world today.”
