C-SPAN caller asks how to be less prejudiced, black woman responds

Aug 25, 2016, 10:01 AM | Updated: 1:20 pm

On C-SPAN’s Washington Journal Sunday, a white man from North Carolina called to ask for advice from a black woman guest on the show on how to be less prejudiced.

The woman, Heather McGhee, is the president of Demos, a progressive public policy organization that advocates for equality.

“I was hoping your guest could help me change my mind about some things,” the guest said. “I’m a white male, and I am prejudiced.

“You know, so I try to avoid that, and I come off as being prejudiced, but I just have fears. I don’t like to be forced to like people. I like to be led to like people through example. What can I do to change? You know, to be a better American?”

Her response was thoughtful and poignant.

“Thank you so much for being honest and for opening up this conversation because it is simply one of the most important ones we have to have in this country,” McGhee said.

She suggested getting to know black families, joining a black church if he’s religious and starting conversations with other members of his community about race.
