With the summer fast coming to an end and the need to get in one last vacation that’s not too far away, one might look to a pair of Arizona lake getaways.
The website Travel and Leisure recently looked at 25 of the country’s best lake vacations, and found two of them only a matter of a few hours away from the Phoenix metro area.
The website found the best lake for desert houseboats is Lake Powell, up along the Utah-Arizona border, while the best lake for partying is naturally Lake Havasu.
The website said that from the original Planet of the Apes to Charlies Angeles Full Throttle, dozens of movies have been filmed in and around Lake Powell. The website recommended to take a houseboat cruise through the red-rock desert wilderness on the lake that was created by the Glen Canyon Dam. The lake stretches 200 miles into uninhabited southern Utah and the 80 side canyons will make a perfect spot where the only boat will be yours.
However, if exploring canyons is not your thing and having a good time on the lake is more your cup of tea, then another Arizona lake might be the best option.
The website noted how Lake Havasu is an annual destination for college students each spring for the time-honored rituals of waterskiing and around-the-clock boat parties. In addition to the action on the lake, Travel and Leisure also pointed out to the action off the water including the nightclubs, bars, restaurants and lake-view hotel rooms and the patio of the swanky Heat Hotel.
