PHOENIX — Clothing retailer Eddie Bauer has admitted that registers at all 360 of its stores were breached by malware for over half of this year.

The company made the announcement Thursday and posted a letter online to the public. The dates stretched from Jan. 2 to July 17. Sales at the website were not affected.

There are three Arizona stores, including a premium store in Chandler and an outlet in Glendale, but an outlet in Tempe closed this year. A store in Scottsdale closed last year.

Krebs on Security had asked the Washington State-based seller about the possible malware attack in July.

The company said an investigation conducted by forensic experts found that the intrusion in its stores was part of an attack directed at restaurants, hotels and other retailers.

Eddie Bauer said it had been working with the FBI and others to find the source and that in the meantime security has been tightened and pointed out that not every transaction was involved.

The outdoor apparel retailer filed for bankruptcy in 2009. It operates retail stores, outlets, direct-order call centers and the website.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
