Fans of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro were not the only ones left cheering at what was on TV during Thursday’s broadcast.
A new trailer for “Star Wars: Rogue One” debuted and fans of the franchise were quick to jump on every detail featured in the trailer.
The latest preview appears to show the main character, a rebellious woman named Jyn Erso, taking the lead of some sort of Rebel (see what they did there?) Alliance attack group.
Erso also apparently bonds with another character and his robotic partner, which seems to echo the relationship shared by Princess Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca in the original trilogy.
It also gives us one second of arguably the most exciting news about “Rogue One:” The imminent return of the infamous “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader.
“Rogue One” will be the first of the “Star Wars” film franchise to stray from the original canon. Dubbed a “sci-fi heist,” “Rogue One” is actually a spinoff of the original George Lucas trilogy and takes place before Luke Skywalker ever leaves his arid homeland to save the galaxy.
The new trailer confirms that Erso’s mission is to gather a team, infiltrate the newly-constructed Death Star and steal the plans (later to be given R2-D2 for delivery to Leia’s “only hope”).
Whatever the story is, the trailers for “Rogue One” has confirmed that our heads will be in a galaxy far, far, away each December for years to come.
