A look at JFK Library plans for 50th anniversary

Nov 18, 2013, 11:25 AM

(AP) – Here’s a look at how the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston will mark the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination:

_ The “An Idea Lives On” website (
www.anidealiveson.org) goes live Monday morning. Visitors can watch an interactive film that includes videos of NASA Commander Chris Cassidy, former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, comedian Conan O’Brien, Freedom Rider Charles Person and others talking about Kennedy’s legacy. Then they’re encouraged to submit their own video, text, audio or photos to answer the question, “How do the ideals of John F. Kennedy live on in your life today?”

_ A small exhibit that starts Friday will include never-before-displayed artifacts from his state funeral, including the flag that draped his casket and the saddle, boots and sword worn by the riderless horse that walked in the funeral procession. Visitors will also see notes written by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy as she made plans for her husband’s funeral and a 15-minute video with footage from the events.

_ Also Friday, the library will host a musical tribute featuring Paul Winter, who performed at the White House with his jazz sextet during Kennedy’s presidency, along with a U.S. Navy choir and James Taylor. Guests including Gov. Deval Patrick will read quotes from Kennedy’s speeches. The concert is not open to the public and will not be performed in front of an audience, but it will be streamed live on the library’s website. Part of the museum will be closed to visitors from 12:30 through 2:30 p.m. to accommodate the filming of the tribute.
