(AP) – On April 18, 1942, the U.S. military attacked Japan with 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers under the command of Lt. Col. James “Jimmy” Doolittle, launched at sea from the USS Hornet carrier:
Number of men on mission: 80
Number killed in crashes or ditching from plane after attack: 3
Number captured by Japanese: 8
Number executed: 3
Number died in captivity: 1
Surviving Doolittle Raiders today: 4
