Judge denies injunction in NYC graffiti mecca case

NEW YORK (AP) – A federal judge has denied an effort by graffiti artists to stop the demolition of a Queens building known as the city’s mecca for aerosol-produced art.
Judge Frederic Block told lawyers for the artists in Brooklyn federal court Friday that he loves the artwork painted on the building _ but said the law was on the building owners’ side.
The Landmarks Preservation Commission said in August the 5Pointz building didn’t meet landmark status.

A post on the website of British street artist Banksy last month read: “Save 5pointz.”
The New York City Council has unanimously approved a plan to demolish the Queens building to make room for two apartment towers. The new development would include artist studio space.
