PHOENIX — Most travelers who pass through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport are in for one of the most pleasant surprises in the nation, a website said.
Lifestyle website Thrillist has Phoenix’s airport in the third spot on its list of the “most surprisingly great airports in America.”
One of the factors that contributed to Sky Harbor’s high placement was its food options.
“Thrillist specifically mentioned Cartel Coffee Lab, Cowboy Ciao and La Grande Orange as great places to eat at the airport,” Sky Harbor spokeswoman Heather Lissner said, noting that the airport has a wide variety of restaurant choices.
The website also praised Sky Harbor’s efforts to encourage travelers to exercise while in Phoenix.
“We offer a fitness trail, where you can walk around Terminal Four, get in your steps, get your exercise and see some of our great landmarks like the downtown skyline and Camelback Mountain,” Lissner said.
But the surprises don’t end at the terminal, according to Thrillist. The website said Phoenix’s car rental center is worth checking out.
“We have art throughout all of our terminals as well as at the rental car center,” Lissner said. “Travelers can see unique exhibitions in the galleries and in the cases throughout the terminals.”
The site said Baltimore-Washington International Airport is tops when it comes to being a surprisingly great airport, followed by Boston’s Logan International Airport.
Detroit Metropolitan Airport and San Francisco International Airport rounded out the top five.
