PHOENIX — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has thrown his support behind the re-election campaign for U.S. Sen John McCain (R-Ariz.).
“I know how hard John works for veterans, for the military, for our national security– and I know that John McCain is a national treasure,” Gingrich said in his Thursday endorsement.
When praising McCain’s work for veterans, Gingrich was likely alluding to statements made by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Earlier this week, Trump said he could not support McCain’s re-election bid because the senator “should have done a much better job for the vets.” Trump did not specifically say what McCain could do to better support veterans.
Gingrich went on to say that McCain is a “patriot” who makes “a real difference” and “serves his country without fear.”
McCain said he was honored to receive Gingrich’s support.
“Throughout his career, Newt has been a strong voice for conservative principles,” McCain said. “I appreciate his support and I look forward to campaign ahead.”
The longtime Arizona senator has also been endorsed by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and several former governors, along with other politicians.
McCain will face state Sen. Kelli Ward in the August primary. Should he win, he will likely face U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick.
