NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) – Police say five firefighters responding to a traffic accident on the New York State Thruway were injured on a nearby road when their fire truck swerved to avoid an oncoming car, hit a guard rail, flipped on its side and rolled onto its roof.
Newburgh police, investigating the Saturday night crash about 75 miles northwest of New York City, said the firefighters’ injuries were not life threatening. They were taken to hospitals.
The Plattekill (PLAT’-uh-kihl) Fire Department truck was put upright and removed from the road.
Police said the fire truck was headed east about 9:10 p.m. when a westbound car crossed partly into the eastbound lane and the truck swerved. The road was wet at the time. Police said the car driver left the scene without stopping.
