RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The Wake County Sheriff’s Department has seized records from the state Labor Department in connection with a mishap at the North Carolina State Fair last week.
Labor Department spokeswoman Dolores Quesenberry said the agency was ordered Tuesday to turn over files related to its inspection and investigation of the “Vortex” ride. Three people were seriously injured last Thursday after the ride started suddenly as passengers were getting off. A ride operator is facing criminal charges for allegedly tampering with one of the ride’s safety features.
Separately, a contract between the state and New York-based carnival operator Powers Great American Midways shows the company was required to provide at least 28 rides classified as “spectacular” or face a maximum daily fine of $5,000.
