PHOENIX — A day after criticizing the Republican Party’s presidential candidate, Arizona Sen. John McCain was set to meet with vice-presidential nominee in Phoenix on Tuesday.

Former Indiana Gov. Mike Pence will host a town hall later in the day in downtown Phoenix.

McCain didn’t divulge what the topics of conversation would include.

He had strongly denounced comments made by Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, toward the Muslim parents of an American serviceman killed in battle on Monday.

McCain told KTAR on Tuesday, the words of the Veterans of Foreign Wars national commander about Trump’s comments have a “special meaning.”

“We have to have a reverence to those who have served and sacrificed and Mr. Trump’s comments were unacceptable. The Veterans of Foreign Wars are specifically tied to the young man who was killed,” McCain said of Capt. Humayun Khan, who died in combat in 2004.

McCain said he will meet briefly with Trump’s running mate Mike Pence in Phoenix at the request of the Indiana Governor.

“I’ll be meeting with him when he arrives. He asked to say hello and I’ll be glad to say hello. He asked to have a conversation and I’m glad to do it.”

McCain will not be at Pence’s rally because of a scheduling conflict.
