American Indian congress elects new leaders

TULSA, Okla. (AP) – The National Congress of American Indians has elected new leaders at its annual convention in Oklahoma.

The new executive committee members were selected Thursday during the NCAI’s 70th annual convention and marketplace meeting in Tulsa.

The committee is charged with advancing the mission of the NCAI to protect and advance tribal sovereignty by representing the issues and priorities of tribal nations throughout the country.

Swinomish Indian Tribal Community Chairman Brian Cladoosby was elected president, and Colville Tribes Chairman Michael Finley was elected first vice president.

Robert Shepard of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate was elected recording secretary. Dennis Welsh Jr., tribal council member of the Colorado River Indian Tribes, was elected treasurer.

The regional vice presidents will be announced Friday.
